Country star headlines 1st UPC event of year
The Ohio University Performing Arts Series will host a flat-out-rockin’ concert at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium tonight.
Miranda Lambert, recently nominated for two Country Music Awards, is coming to OU. The Performing Arts Series wanted to bring a successful upcoming country artist to OU, Andrew Holzaepfel, assistant director with the Office of University Events, said.
Her debut album Kerosene hit number one on the Billboard Country Albums Chart soon after its release in March of 2005. The album quickly went gold, selling 500,000 copies after its release.
According to www.Billboard.com, Lambert joins artists Gretchen Wilson, Wynonna Judd and LeAnn Rimes as one of the six country artists ever to have an album debut at number one.
Lambert, 22, grew up in Texas in a family dedicated to music. At 17, Lambert’s father taught her three guitar chords, and soon after she was writing her own songs, Lambert said. It wasn’t long until Lambert found her own style.
She describes her sound as being a mix between Emmylou Harris and Sheryl Crow with a little bit of an attitude.
"We want everybody to leave the show saying ‘Wow, that was awesome,’ " Lambert said.
Lambert prides herself on being an artist of real music.
"Real music to me is when the person singing or performing really makes me believe what they’re talking about," she said.
This is the first college campus Lambert’s band will perform at this year. Lambert said she looks to music as her version of college and education. She is positive that the band will fit right in with OU students, Lambert said.
Lambert is finishing the last leg of her independent tour before joining Dierks Bentley for the Bud Light-sponsored Locked and Loaded tour beginning in October.
The interest for Miranda Lambert has picked up, and ticket sales have been steady throughout the week, Holzaepfel said. Of the 1,900 tickets available, approximately 1,100 had been purchased as of yesterday.
Holzaepfel said he believes Miranda is perfect for OU.
"We’re really looking forward to the show," Holzaepfel said. "I think it’s going to be a good one."
